Staring into the white-noise of the TV set s by the stage [Memories from my childhood III ]

1) Gum ball and various 'candy machines'

The click click click of those little candy machines [in stores and cafes] just might be the greatest sound in the world. I don’t even like candy, but I love that sound and all the anticipation it brings; the sound of pure happiness and instant gratification.

My favorite machines used to be those giant gumball ones with the whirly-twirly slides that brought the gumball to the trap door. I definitely remember the couple of times you saw the stupid ball go down the slide, every which way, but never showed up to fall gently in your hand at the door. How did this happen? What mind games! It was confusing and probably some of the most disappointing moments ever.

10 seconds of suspense for a half an hour of jaw pain? totally worth it.

2) The claw

You know what I’m talking about, the ones with the stuffed animals. I know a lot of people who hate this 'toy'. Not me. I had a love affair with those when I was a little older and my visuo-spatial skills sharpened enough for me to be the self-titled claw-machine-master. I regularly showcased my talents at McKennas. I really enjoyed winning. I sometimes went after the toys that I knew other kids wanted, just to show off…

maybe it was a little cruel, I don’t know. But I spent a lot of money just to show that thing who’s boss.
