Long Answers to Short Questions

I guess sometimes I tend to be a little loud in public places when I listen to music because some girl asked me what I was listening to when I was sitting outside the other day. Singing/humming (off key) just makes the whole experience more enjoyable sometimes, what do you expect?

This naturally led to the unavoidable question: "What kind of music do you like?" If only I could give you an answer that wouldnt take up twenty minutes of your life.

But I have finally formulated an answer, however incomplete it may be. And instead of bands I give you:

  • Indie Rock. -- Ok, what does this mean? I honestly don't know, since it means so many things and nothing at the same time. But I still use it...
  • "Emotional" but not Emo (stop saying emo!)
  • Pop but not so popular (Warhol did pop in a commercial way. Rauchenberg did pop in fine art way).
  • Soul-ful but not necessarily Soul (though I do love me some soul/motown.)
  • Haunting. But not in an evil way. Not like a clown.
  • Folkish but not [always] country.
  • Catchy.
  • Moody, but not whiney.
  • Insightful.
  • Melodic - Yes.Very.
  • Ambient/ Electronic- I definitely have my moments. Just beats, please.
  • Playful.
  • College Radio? - yes.
  • Punk Rock? ehh..let me get back to you when I have a better understanding of what this means.

That is the beginning of an answer that constantly changes. And probably not something she wanted to hear in our short conversation.

In any case, I love learning about people through their music. I think it says a lot about someone...in a way that that these words cant really articulate, I'm sure.
